How to do Smith Machine Close-Grip Bench Press

Step-by-step

  1. Place a bench under the Smith machine so the bar lowers to your lower chest
  2. Grip the bar at shoulder width and rotate it off the rack
  3. Lower the bar to your lower chest keeping your elbows close to your torso
  4. Press the bar up with your triceps to lockout
  5. Rotate the bar back onto the hooks at the end of the set

Coaching tip

Keep your hands at shoulder width; a narrower grip needlessly strains the wrists and elbows.
